Item description

Pair of barbotine ceramic cachepots, magnificently enriched with elaborate floral decorations. The green colour shade is particularly well guessed and contrasts well with the celestial interior. They have a water drainage hole at the bottom. Produced in France between 1920 and 1925 in pure Liberty style. Barbotines are ancient French ceramics with bright colours, bright finish and relief shapes that became very fashionable from the second half of the 19th century to the 1930s. The technique used in the decoration of this type of ceramics consisted in applying semi-liquid clay, by means of a special syringe or brush, on the object not yet dry, in order to obtain a decoration in relief that was then finished and painted. The colours were obtained by mixing metal oxides with the enamel. The barbotine technique, known since the Minoan era, was widespread in Europe. The barbotine ceramic cachepots are containers for plants, created to hide the simplicity of terracotta pots and to enrich in an elegant and personal way the furnishing of houses. In 1867 a new Universal Exhibition was organized in Paris where the great French manufacturers presented a vast selection of Barbotines ceramics on their stands, achieving incredible success, surpassing even the English ones.
