Monotype Arlecchino e due dame by Romeo Costetti, measures in mm plate 495 x 405. Romeo Costetti (Reggio Emilia 1871 - Rome 1957) was a painter and engraver who specialized in the monotype technique. After an initial training at the Art Institute of Bologna, in 1886 he went to Naples to follow the drawing courses of Domenico Morelli. He then moved to Paris in 1899 where he came into contact with the exponents of the artistic avant-garde, from France will travel to other countries approaching the symbolist themes. In the early decades of the twentieth century is linked to the environment of the Roman Secession, often preferring the technique of monotype. He through this technique will try to translate the mere reality but also investigate more mysterious aspects. He will be interested in the carnival masks from the tenth until you get in '30 to expose in Milan the series Venetian masks. He exhibited at the Exhibition of etchings in Paris in 1930. In this sheet the artist represents on a beach the meeting between two ladies and Harlequin, a well-known mask of Bergamo origin but Venetian thanks to Carlo Goldoni from the characteristic dress with multicolored lozenges. The two women wrapped in elaborate nineteenth-century clothes are caught from behind with their eyes turned to Harlequin who is seen in profile right, seem to be talking to each other. In the background a strip of sea and the sky occupies more than half of the sheet. Impression excellent, crisp and vivid colors. Excellent state of preservation.
