Item description

Adriaen van Ostade (Haarlem 1610 - Haarlem 1685) was a Dutch painter and engraver, son of the weaver Jan Hendricx, whose nickname Ostade derives from the name of the village from which his father came. He was trained by the painter Frans Hals; in 1634 he joined the Guild of St. Luke. Considered one of the most important Dutch painters of his time, he devoted himself to genre painting depicting images of peasant life. He produced not only small oil paintings but also watercolours, pen drawings and about fifty elaborate engravings in which scenes from everyday life and landscapes are treated with luministic effects in the style of Rembrandt. In this print, the artist depicts a moment of life, a still image of a mother standing at the door of a rustic house. A grown child is standing outside, about to receive in her arms a smaller child that the woman is gently handing to her. A marked hatching of oblique lines creates shadows inside the house so as to bring out the main figure who is making the gesture with a gentle, attentive gaze. The focus is entirely on this scene and no other details are explored. Bottom left engraved signature AV.o. Good impression in excellent condition, trimmed at the copper stop not always visible. Exemplar in the VI/VI state, with rounded corners, the plate retouched and the addition of vertical lines on the mother's right cheek. Thick paper datable to the 18th century. Another specimen is kept at the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo. Bibliography: Hollstein 14; Bartch I.357.14, Godefroy 33.
