Crucifixion of Christ, Neapolitan oil on canvas, 17th century

Crucifixion of Christ, Neapolitan oil on canvas, 17th century 1370375

Item description

Oil painting on canvas depicting the Crucifixion of Christ. Induced fluorescence reveals the presence of numerous micro- and macro-gaps, probably closed during restoration. Located across the entire surface of the painting, they are easily recognisable as areas of irregular contours or lines, both of which are very dark in colour. The same technique also reveals some details that are not clearly visible, such as the Virgin's cloak and Mary Magdalene's face. The latter, in particular, appears more masculine than the visible image, the shape of the face is more slender, the hair seems to fall over the shoulders in a more defined and clear manner and the neck, due to a play of shadows, seems to be slimmer. XRF analysis made it possible to recognise the chemical elements used in the paint palette and in the underlying layers. All of the chemical elements determined are related to pigments that are relevant to the historical period in which the painting was attributed (lead-based pigments such as white lead, litharge, minium), iron-based pigments (ochres) and mercury-based pigments (cinnabar/greenish). Condition: Very good condition. Provenance: Naples 17th century. Document: Certificate of Authenticity. Assistance: We are at your disposal for further clarifications or photographic details.
