Herodias Carrying the Head of St. John the Baptist to Salome, oil on canvas, 17th century

Herodias Carrying the Head of St. John the Baptist to Salome, oil on canvas, 17th century 1370342

Item description

The painting depicts a biblical subject narrated in the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, whose protagonists are Herodias and her daughter Salome. During the birthday party of Herod Antipas, Salome's stepfather, the young girl danced for him, entertaining him and his guests at a rich banquet. To reward his stepdaughter, Herod promised to give her anything she wished. Salome, urged on by her mother, wanted the head of St John the Baptist, who had strongly condemned the behaviour of Herod and his mistress. The Baptist was killed and Salome gave her mother his head, which she placed on a silver tray. In the foreground is the Evangelist's head, which is violently held by the executioner, while the two women look towards the king, proud of what they have done.
