Anatomical torso produced in the 1960s by Produzione Scientifica Paravia, known for its accurate anatomy models. This anatomical model was created by improving on papermaking methods that began around 1891. These methods resulted in models that were resistant to dry air and humidity. Anatomical model from 1960 on a wooden slab: the outside of the figure shows a decomposed half of the torso revealing the muscular structure of the body;, the chest and abdomen are made up of a removable section that is attached by metal clips to the main body, removal of the slab reveals the internal organs that are not present. The inside and outside of the figure are painted and lacquered to further represent a human torso and its anatomical structure, the figure is supported on a base constructed from a dark, narrow-grained wood. The figure is made of fibrous paste that covers a structure of wire and wood. Layers of fibre are applied to the paste to create a substrate on which a white background (plaster) is applied, this background provides the base on which arteries and veins made of thread are applied. Both the interior and exterior of the figure are lacquered: the many colours used include reds and blues (representing oxygenated or oxygen-depleted areas) as well as ochres, browns and greens. This antique hand-painted anatomical torso model was used to teach the class. It is made of papier-mâché and plaster on wood and is a large model. It also has a stand on the back but is nice to use as a wall decoration. Traces of age and use, some paint loss.
