Item description

Vicente Victoria (Denia 1650 - Rome 1712) was a Spanish priest, painter and engraver born of an Italian father. He approached painting from a very young age and began his studies in Valencia at the same time as studying grammar and theology, before moving to Rome in 1675 until 1688. He became painter to the Grand Duke Cosimo III de Medici and completed his training with Carlo Maratta (Camerano 1625 - Rome 1713). On his return to Spain he wrote treatises on painting, collected drawings and prints and studied the ancients, particularly Raphael. He was as interested in frescoes and painting as he was in engraving. In 1698 he settled permanently in Rome. Three etched plates are known, one of which is in the British Museum: one is a translation from Raphael and the other two are inventions in which he treats half-naked bodies with a modus operandi unique to the Spanish tradition. Victoria is also remembered for his still lifes painted in a hyperealist manner. In this print, almost lying under a large tree, we see Mary Magdalene. The Saint is half-naked; a richly draped fabric leaves her legs, shoulders and chest uncovered, her long hair hiding her breasts. Her head is thrown back, in her clasped hands she holds the crucifix and rests her left arm on a skull. An intense, divine light radiates behind her head, accentuating the precise chiaroscuro contrasts. In the background, a landscape of mountain ranges opens up before the viewer's eyes and, just beyond the trunk, a traveller is making his way to his home. Bottom left Vin s, Vict a, Valen s. In et fe. Rom. According to scholars, the copperplate was made between 1673 and 1712 and printed in Rome. Excellent impression with delicate blacks. Excellent condition. Trimmed at the copper stop.
