Item description

Anthonie Waterloo (Lille 1610 - Utrecht 1690) was a Dutch landscape painter, son of a Flemish craftsman who fled to Amsterdam because of religious persecution. There is no information about his training and it is therefore possible that he was self-taught, but his activity as an art dealer put him in contact with many contemporary artists from whom he learned. He is considered to be one of the first artists to make drawing his favourite language and was also a prolific engraver. It was thanks to his etchings, mainly of landscapes and views, that his name began to circulate and his drawings became increasingly popular. This print is part of the Six landscapes series. The undisputed protagonist is the wooded landscape characterised by tall trees with twisting trunks and branches winding upwards. Intense light creates chiaroscuro effects that show some leaves in the shade and others in the sun. At the centre of this theatrical backdrop, a gate, a sort of fence made of wooden planks, separates two men caught in conversation. An unmade road leads to the river just visible on the right, the waters are rippling and nature is reflected on its surface. At the bottom, beyond the image, engraved AW. F. Very good impression, strong inking. Very good state of preservation. Minimal margins beyond the copper plate. Specimen in III/III with added marks in the shaded areas of the fence at the man pointing and on the lower area of the larger trunk on the left. Basan edition. Light paper with thick gauze. Fragment of watermark letters: I S. On the reverse ancient writing in pencil; in black ink: F.A. Maglin 1891 (Lught 1777). Maglin was a porcelain decorator who lived in Paris until about 1910. His collection of prints and drawings was passed on to his sons who sold it. The date after his signature refers to the year the print was purchased. Bibliography: Hollstein 56; Bartsch II.62.56
