Item description

Beautiful early 20th century Italian antique wall tapestry. A beautiful romantic neoclassical scene hand-painted with the grass-juice technique. With the grass-juice technique, the preparatory cartoon drawing was not woven but painted by having it absorbed into the fabric (often a silk straw). Various vegetable pigments were used and the result was a pictorial rendering similar to watercolour, which was very fashionable during the 18th century and beyond. The natural pigments were diluted with alum and lemon juice, which acted as fixatives and ensured the vividness and brightness of the colours. The colour was spread over and over again so that the fabric completely absorbed the pigment; the raw materials from which the colour was obtained were the most varied, guado, walnut husk, saffron; a recurring ingredient was also cabbage sauce: a puree of cabbage leaves at the base of many cold colours. Excellent conditions. We recommend you take a close look at all the attached photos.
