Item description
Selene chair by Vico Magistretti for Artemide, 1960s. The design dates back to 1966 and the chair was created to be produced in plastic, as Magistretti himself says: "The seat and back are simple curved planes. The legs were, in my opinion, the real image of the piece with the thin volume like the leg of an ordinary wooden chair. I solved it by using the feature of a mold of plastic material formed from a simple 3-millimeter thick sheet with a simple "S" section that was very strong and gave the object a clear kinship with the common legless elephant chairs and not chair legs. It was fun working with the model carpenter on the wooden model." Mass-produced, Selene is the result of a single stamping and pressing action on the prepreg sheet. Magistretti solves the problem of leg strength by adopting an "S" configuration that gives strength to the plastic sheet that is only 3 mm thick.
