Item description

The Lettera DL, where DL stands for De Luxe, was designed especially for a female, elegance-loving clientele. Designed in 1965 by architect and designer Ettore Sottsass. It mechanically resembles the Lettera 32, released in 1963 and designed by Marcello Nizzoli. The typewriter is in perfect condition, is in working order and the vinyl cover is undamaged and unbroken. The Italian version of the machine uses the qwerty layout, although versions with different key layouts were produced depending on the language they were intended for. There are 43 alphanumeric keys for a total of 86 signs. In addition to these, the keyboard includes a space bar, two keys for setting capital letters, a caps lock key, a toggle for overriding the set margins, a key for going back one character, a toggle for setting tabulations and a key (red) for switching between tabulations. The set of available characters has obvious shortcomings: there is no key with the number 1, which is obtained by using the lowercase letter l (elle) or the capital I (i); likewise, there is no zero, which is obtained by typing the capital O (o); there are also no keys for the capitalised accented vowels used in the Italian language, which had to be replaced by normal letters followed by the apostrophe. This type of solution was quite common in typewriters of the time. The machine comes complete with a dustproof case and a carrying case for easy transportation, which serves as a lid when not in use.
