Item description

Piede Romano ceramic pencil holder, design by Piero Fornasetti. Italy, 1960s. Painter, sculptor, decorator and designer Piero Fornasetti was born in Milan in 1913 and trained at the Brera Academy, where he was expelled for insubordination, and then at the Scuola Superiore di Arti Applicate all'Industria. In the 1930s, he met Giò Ponti and produced a series of lunars for him and in the same years began his exhibition season at the Milan Triennials. In 1933 he made his debut as a painter in an exhibition at the University of Milan and exhibited a series of silk scarves at the Milan Triennale. In 1935, he was again invited to participate in the VI Triennale d'Arte in Milan, where he presented, along with other works, his first ceramic work, a decorative frieze in archaic style. During the war years, he took refuge in Switzerland and in the early post-war years he devoted himself to ceramics, designing some silkscreen and decal decorations to be applied to porcelain and ceramic artefacts almost always made by 'Richard-Ginori' and presented at the 1947 Milan Triennale. In 1950 he was entrusted with the realisation of the decorations for the Casino Municipale in Sanremo. In 1951 he was again at the Milan Triennale where he presented the Palladiana chest of drawers and the following year he was entrusted with the decoration of the first cabin of the Andrea Doria liner. Some objects, also in ceramics, designed by Piero Fornasetti bear the 'Bucciarelli Milano' trademark co-produced by Fornasetti, perhaps for export. Between 1955 and 1958 he devoted himself to the creation of the 'Metaphysical Room'. He also collaborated, designing some objects, for 'Bitossi'. Piero Fornasetti died in Milan in 1988. 21.5 x 9 x H 9 cm. Excellent condition, no cracks or chipping. Missing gilding visible in photo. Evaluate through the attached photos.
