Painting depicting Bathsheba at her bath, oil on canvas, 18th century

Old Italian painting from the 18th century. Oil on canvas painting depicting mythological subject, Bathsheba at her bath, of good painterly hand. Painting of great size and pleasant impact adorned with a 20th century frame, carved and gilded, with some small signs of time. Pleasing is the composition chosen by the painter in depicting Bathsheba from behind in the foreground, in the distance to the right, King David (see photo). The sacred scriptures narrate that one day King David, walking on the terrace of his palace, sees Bathsheba and falls in love with her. She is the wife of Uriah, a soldier engaged in war, and David makes him fight in the front line. Uriah will die in battle and the king will be able to take the woman as his wife. An ideal painting to place in a large room, living room or study, with beautiful decoration. Work that has undergone conservative restoration, re-staining, frame replacement and colour restoration in some places (see photo). Painting overall in fair condition. Light painting H 115 x W 87 cm.
