Item description
Grande Mania, one of the first lamps designed by Vico Magistretti, was presented at the 13th Milan Triennale (1964), although the design dated back to 1963, the year he started production with Artemide. Ludovico 'Vico' Magistretti (Milan, 6 October 1920 - Milan, 19 September 2006) was one of Italy's most important designers, architects and urban planners. His clean, essential design characterised and inspired the world of home, office and business furniture throughout the latter part of the 20th century. The legendary Italian lighting company Artemide was founded in the province of Milan in 1959 by designer and engineer Ernesto Gismondi, born in Sanremo in 1931, and designer Sergio Mazza, born in Milan in 1931. As is well known, it was the latter who designed the Alfa Lamp, the company's first successful product, a year before the launch of Artemide. In the decades that followed, both founders continued to create new designs for Artemide's ever-evolving collections, whose goal is to develop distinctive and eye-catching lamps, including pendant and ceiling lamps, in collaboration with leading design talents from around the world. Successful pieces from Artemide's extensive catalogue include the Eclisse space lamp (1967) by Vico Magistretti and the Tizio minimal halogen table lamp (1972) by German-Italian designer Michele De Lucchi, which became one of the most popular ever produced. The 1980s saw the launch of the Tolomeo lamp (1987), designed by the Italian Giancarlo Fassina, which soon became an international symbol of the 'Made in Italy' style that dominated the design scene at the end of the last century.
