Item description

Round table by Eero Saarinen for Knoll, 1950s. Base made of heavy cast aluminum and top made of smooth white satin-finished high-thickness laminate. It can seat 6 to 8 people. Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was an American-born Finnish architect. The son of an architect and sculptor, Saarinen attended public schools in Michigan and in 1929 joined the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris to study sculpture. He then studied architecture at Yale University from 1931 to 1934 and had the opportunity to travel to Europe and North Africa from 1934 to 1935. He began his professional life from the United States doing research on housing and urban planning with the Flint Institute of Research and Planning in Michigan in 1936. After working here for two years, he joined his father's firm. Eero's first international recognition came during his collaboration with his father: he began with the design of a chair, and later this duo managed to win many other competitions for their innovative designs. After his father's death in 1950, Saarinen founded his company "Eero Saarinen & Associates" in Birmingham, where he worked until his death in 1961. During this period he devoted much of his time to the design of furniture and other home furnishings. During his career Saarinen always seemed to be competing with his own designs, whenever he set out to create something new. He studied the stages of construction with great care and paid attention to all details starting from the client's concerns and requests to the final execution. He was responsible for introducing the trend of experimentation and design exploration in the field of architecture.
