Tibetan Buddhist Kartika in gilded sculptural metal, end 19th century











Kartika or Drigug in good quality Tibetan bronze, dating back to the end of the nineteenth century, about 1890. This crescent -shaped ritual knife, cutting/shaking, held in hand, have a profound spiritual meaning in Buddhism and are used in the tantric ceremonies of Vajrayana Buddhism. It is a refined large specimen weight of 1,650 g. It has horse -shaped knobs and, below, 3 deities on one and 3 elephant heads. The main body decorated with a rope or chain ring that leads to a mythological creature that is located just above the crescent -shaped blade. It is in good condition and bronze has acquired a color/patina of great beauty after many years of use and manipulation.
