Important religious painting from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting the Virgin of Sorrows near the Cross on Calvary, surrounded by angels carrying the instruments of the Passion of Christ, such as the crown of thorns and nails. Below, the skull completes the iconographic reading, as Golgotha literally means "place of the skull".
The composition, solemn and theatrical, develops around the strong vertical axis of the Cross, while the figure of the Virgin, wrapped in the blue mantle and pink dress, abandons herself in a gesture of intense emotional participation. The angels, arranged with refined scenographic layout, introduce a note of luminous grace and dynamism, typical of central-northern Italian painting of the second half of the seventeenth century.
Of particular interest is the presence, at the bottom left, of a noble coat of arms with a double-headed eagle, an element that suggests an aristocratic commission for a large noble residence.
Painting of monumental size and notable pictorial quality, ideal for a large room, a staircase, a private chapel or a representative environment. 20th century gilded wooden frame, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. Work already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some places. Overall in good state of conservation. Light painting H 228 x W 155 cm.
