PoMo: The New Museum Reshaping the Scandinavian Art Scene

In February 2025, one of Northern Europe’s most exciting new cultural spaces opened in Trondheim: PoMo Museum, a museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art with the ambition of bringing major international artists to the heart of Scandinavia.

The museum officially opened on 15 February 2025 inside the historic building of the city’s former main post office, constructed in 1911 in the Art Nouveau style. The transformation project preserved the building’s original architectural character while introducing contemporary interiors designed by the Franco-Iranian designer India Mahdavi together with Norwegian architect Erik Langdalen. The result is a bright exhibition space with bold colors that engages in dialogue with the building’s historic identity.

At the core of the museum lies the collection of Norwegian collectors Monica Reitan and Ole Robert Reitan, who set out to create an institution capable of bringing international contemporary art beyond the usual circuits of Europe’s major capitals. The collection and exhibition program include works by some of the most influential artists on the international scene, including Louise Bourgeois, Simone Leigh, Sol LeWitt, Ugo Rondinone, Franz West and Katharina Fritsch.
The inaugural exhibition, “Postcards from the Future,” brought together around one hundred works by contemporary artists, exploring themes of communication and the passage of time — a clear reference to the building’s past as a postal hub.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is its focus on female representation in the collection: a significant portion of acquisitions is dedicated to women artists, helping to rebalance a presence that has historically been limited in Nordic museum collections.

The opening of PoMo has already had a significant cultural impact across Scandinavia. Trondheim — long known for its university and the medieval Nidaros Cathedral — is quickly becoming a new destination for contemporary art. The museum is part of a growing cultural ecosystem that includes institutions such as Kunsthall Trondheim and the Trondheim Kunstmuseum.

With its international program, iconic architecture, and open, inclusive curatorial vision, PoMo is now one of the most dynamic museum projects in Northern Europe — a place where contemporary art meets a city in transformation, strengthening Scandinavia’s role on the global cultural stage.
