Item description

The Elda by Joe Colombo is one of the most iconic armchairs of Italian design from the 1960s and, in my view, one of the projects that best illustrates Colombo's vision of the “furniture of the future.” The Story Colombo designed the Elda in 1963 for the Italian company Comfort, which began producing it in 1965. The name Elda was a tribute to the designer's wife. The chair is particularly significant because Colombo applied a technology that was still relatively new in furniture design: a large molded fiberglass shell. The inspiration also came from nautical technology and the construction of boat hulls. The result is almost paradoxical: an imposing, enveloping armchair that appears heavy, yet is built around a technologically advanced and relatively lightweight structure. Construction and Design The Elda has an almost shell-like form: a large outer shell made of fiberglass-reinforced polyester; an interior composed of seven large cushions; upholstery originally made in leather; a 360-degree swivel base; dimensions of approximately 92–96 cm per side, depending on the specific example and documentation. What is particularly interesting is that the shell is not simply a structure supporting the upholstery: it becomes a kind of protective enclosure that surrounds the user's body. The large, segmented cushions reinforce this sensation. It can almost be seen as a futuristic reinterpretation of the traditional English wingback chair: instead of wood and conventional upholstery, Colombo uses fiberglass, plastic, polyurethane foam and leather. Why It Is So Important The Elda is interesting not only because it looks futuristic. Its real importance lies in the way form, material and the user's interaction with the object are conceived as a single system. Colombo was not simply designing an attractive armchair. He was exploiting the possibilities of a new material to achieve a form that would have been much more difficult to produce using traditional techniques. Then there is the swivel mechanism. The chair is not permanently oriented toward a single point in the room: it can rotate completely, allowing the user to constantly change their relationship with the surrounding space. This is a small but significant example of Colombo's broader vision of the home as something mobile, flexible and transformable. The same idea would become even more evident in his later projects, such as the Tube Chair and his modular living environments. A Space-Age Object Today, the Elda may look familiar, but in 1963 it must have appeared remarkably advanced. The large white shell, the black cushions, the rounded shapes and the ability to rotate immediately evoke the Space Age aesthetic of the 1960s. It is therefore not surprising that the chair was also used in science-fiction film and television productions, including Space: 1999. Perhaps this is one of the Elda's greatest achievements: it does not try to represent the future simply through futuristic decoration; it attempts to create a different way of sitting and of experiencing space.
