Description: Refined pair of cream-bottomed Satsuma ceramic vases (ivory), characterised by the typical finely quibbled display case (craquelé). The vases feature a rich decoration of polychrome enamels and pure gold, with narrative scenes depicting figures from the Japanese noble and warrior tradition.
Decorative Details:
Central Body: The vases are decorated with reserves (panels) showing scenes of court life and Samurai figures in traditional armor (yoroi). The painting is meticulous, with a skillful use of "moriage" relief to accentuate the details of the clothing and armor.
Ornamental Patterns: The areas surrounding the main panels are embellished with geometric shippo motifs, cherry blossoms and peonies, symbols of nobility and prosperity.
Edges: The shoulder and foot of the vases feature decorative bands with Greek and stylized floral motifs in iron red, cobalt blue and gold.
Frames and Supports: The pair is embellished with gilded bronze frames in an eclectic European style:
Mouth: Upper border with knurled motif and scrolls.
Base: Richly perforated quadripod pedestals with grotesque masks, which give momentum and importance to objects.
Conservation Status: Excellent overall conservation status. The pottery has no obvious cracks or restorations. The gilding of the frames retains a beautiful shine.
