Designed by Kazuhide Takahama for Gavina's Studio Simon division in the 1970s, this two-seater sofa belongs to the body of lacquered furniture born from Takahama's collaboration with Dino Gavina—a partnership that, starting in the 1960s, pioneered the use of glossy lacquer in industrially produced Italian seating. Takahama, who trained in Japan before settling in Italy, brought a formal rigor rooted in Japanese design culture to Gavina's production, favoring closed, box-like volumes over the exposed metal structures typical of much Italian seating of the period. The sofa's frame is made of black lacquered wood, with solid panel sides that convey the impression of continuous volumes rather than an assembled structure, consistent with Takahama's preference for seamless surfaces. Two removable seat cushions and two backrest cushions in black leather are housed within this shell, upholstered with visible stitching along the joints. The contrast between the hard, reflective lacquer and the soft leather is a visual feature that distinguishes this sofa.
