Item description

This refined Chinese table lamp, crafted in blue and white glazed porcelain, most likely dates from 1950–1955. The structure, with its squared form slightly tapering toward the base, is entirely hand-decorated with elegant stylized floral motifs, characteristic of Chinese ceramic tradition. The flowers depicted, reminiscent of chrysanthemums and peonies—symbols deeply rooted in Eastern art, associated with nobility, beauty, and longevity—intertwine with flowing vegetal scrolls, creating a harmonious and highly sophisticated design. The lamp rests on a dark lacquered wooden base, enhancing its geometric lines and giving balance to the overall composition. The workmanship reflects the influence of Jingdezhen, the historic city renowned for producing porcelain of exceptional quality, regarded for centuries as the epicenter of Chinese ceramic artistry. Jingdezhen is documented as producing refined pieces as early as the 6th century CE, continuing to create outstanding works under various dynasties (Tang, Song, Yuan). Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the Jingdezhen factory was rebuilt with the goal of developing fine porcelain for both domestic use and the international market. By the 1950s, production had expanded to include a wide range of traditional ceramics as well as modern designs. These creations embody the aesthetic values of Chinese culture while representing one of the most complete porcelain industries in the world. The blue decoration on a white ground, executed with cobalt oxide underglaze, draws on an ancient technique rooted in the imperial production of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Here, it is reinterpreted with a modern sensibility, well-suited to the international taste of the mid-20th century. More than a lighting piece, this lamp is a decorative object of great presence, capable of enhancing both classical and eclectic interiors as well as modern settings. Perfect on a console, side table, or desk, it can also be used as a pair to create symmetry in a living room or bedroom. When paired with a light-colored shade, the lamp allows the light to highlight its intricate decoration, adding elegance and refinement to any space. The lamp is in good condition. The electrical system is functional, but the wiring is European. The voltage compatibility in other countries must always be checked by an electrician before use. The plug and switch are very unusual. Dimensions Height: 36cm (14.17 in), Width: 11 cm (4.33 in), Depth: 11 cm (4.33 in).
