Item description

Oil on panel. The book of the same name in the Bible tells the story of the prophet Daniel who King Darius the Mede, deceived by court rivals jealous of his rank, condemns to death and has him thrown into the lions' den. Having discovered the deception, at dawn the following day the king hurries back to the pit and finds Daniel alive, who tells how God had sent an angel to close the mouths of the lions, \"because I was found blameless before him\". The biblical episode has been depicted many times in art, both pictorial and sculptural, given its strong narrative and educational impact. The painting went to public auction on 25 October 2018 as a \"17th century Lombard school\", but in our opinion it is a later work, from the 19th century, inspired by ancient pictorial methods.
