This sculpture is a finely chiseled bronze bust depicting a young woman, known as "La Zingara" (or "Scugnizza"), the work of the famous Neapolitan sculptor Vincenzo Gemito, whose signature can be seen engraved on the front edge of the dress. The girl's face, framed by a headscarf tied behind her neck and by locks of wavy hair, is captured in an extraordinarily spontaneous and vital expression, characterized by a realistic smile that shows her teeth and a mobile and intense gaze. The work rests on a turned baluster base in dark material.
The creation of this subject dates back to the end of the 19th century, approximately around the 1880s in Naples. From a stylistic point of view, the sculpture fits fully into Italian Verismo, a movement that Gemito profoundly influenced by portraying the faces of ordinary people and street kids with extreme naturalness and psychological sensitivity. The extraordinary rendering of the light on the bronze surfaces and the freshness of the modeling give the figure a strong sense of immediacy and everyday truth.
