This elegant pair of Gaetano bedside tables, designed by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio during the 1970s, is crafted in Padouk wood, whose naturally rich reddish-brown tones enhance the strong architectural character of the design.
Each nightstand is conceived as a compact rectangular volume, resting on a substantial recessed plinth and surmounted by a clean, slightly projecting top. The restrained geometry of the main cabinet provides a deliberate counterpoint to the remarkable treatment of the front.
The defining feature of the Gaetano model is its deeply sculptural façade, composed of a dense sequence of vertical wooden elements. Rather than functioning as conventional applied decoration, these elements project outward at different points through angular and curved transitions, creating a complex three-dimensional rhythm across the entire front.
Light and shadow consequently become an integral part of the design, continually changing the perception of the façade depending on the viewing angle.
The sculptural composition is integrated into the front door, which opens to reveal a practical internal storage compartment. When closed, the functional nature of the door is visually absorbed into the continuous decorative composition which, like a musical score, allowing the piece to retain the appearance of a compact wooden sculpture.
Offered as a matching pair, the nightstands create a particularly strong symmetrical composition when positioned on either side of a bed, while each piece is visually substantial enough to function independently as a small side cabinet.
