This is a Chinese soapstone (shoushan) sculpture depicting a deity of wisdom or longevity, likely one of the Eight Immortals or a high dignitary. He is recognizable by his elaborate headdress, long flowing beard, and the Ruyi scepter he holds, a symbol of good luck. The statue rests on an octagonal stone base of a contrasting color, carved with Greek fret motifs. Regarding its period, the carving style and the patina of the stone suggest production between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century (late Qing Dynasty or Republic period), an era when these objects were very popular both domestically and for export to the West. Dimensions: 30 x 13 x 11 cm (H x W x D)
