Although the painting depicts a young woman with all the typical features of an 18th century woman, the pictorial style suggests a later date, around the beginning of the 19th century. It was probably painted by an artist still influenced by eighteenth-century fashion.
The painting depicts an elaborate and complex scene. The young woman in the foreground is a splendid bridesmaid in elegant eighteenth-century style silk dresses. Every detail of her clothing and her carefully groomed hairstyle suggest a high social position. The young woman is probably portrayed in a sumptuous garden, characterized by lush vegetation and some typical elements (a wall, a vase) typical of the gardens of rich historic homes. On the left, a path traces the perspective and leads the observer's eye towards the figure of a gentleman walking lost in thought. The background is complemented by a mountain landscape. The soft light and darkness of the landscape suggest that the scene is set in the evening.
It is a fascinating scene that leaves the viewer with numerous possibilities for interpreting the two characters: the young woman, leaning against a low wall, is absorbed in her thoughts, her face reflects different emotions (expectation, worry, patience, etc.); the gentleman in the background in the distance walks with his arms folded and his head bowed, but in the opposite direction to that of the young woman. You can immerse yourself with your imagination in this fantastic scene, study the details and give your personal interpretation.
