Item description

An original, unique, and rare Italian artwork created in 2015 in Prato (Florence, Italy) by painter and sculptor Lella Rendesi. Centered on the theme of the Italian flag, the piece is executed using a refined mixed-media technique. The artist works on a black canvas printed with a musical score, applying white acrylic enamel with a palette knife. Over this surface, she then hand-paints numbers and the Italian tricolor with a brush. The composition is further enriched by the addition of a wooden slat affixed to the enameled ground, onto which a real Italian flag in fabric is mounted. Symbolic elements complete the work: at the top of the slat, a toothed iron wheel is secured and sealed with a lead rod; at the bottom, a vintage telephone token is attached, bound with string and similarly sealed with lead. The result is a highly evocative composition, defined by a precise and deliberate symmetry. Through this structured arrangement, the artist conveys her personal vision of the Italian flag and a distinctive sense of rhythm and musicality. The piece radiates a powerful emotional presence, evoking themes of identity, reverence, and memory. Lella Rendesi, a self-taught and eclectic artist, lived and worked in Prato, where she became a significant cultural figure. Her studio in the historic city center was not only a place of artistic production but also a vibrant meeting point for intellectual exchange. Her work draws inspiration from everyday life, transforming ordinary objects into meaningful artistic expressions, always imbued with a deeper message. Her oeuvre reveals connections to rationalist principles and minimalism, along with a subtle tension expressed through nuanced chromatic variations. At times ironic, at times austere or critical, her visual language incorporates objects, symbols, numbers, and text—reassembled and reinterpreted in paintings and sculptures with strong social and political undertones. The materiality of her works, in its varied forms, becomes a means to explore balance and imbalance within the contemporary human condition. Her works are held not only in Italy but also in private collections in Paris, New York, and Miami. The painting is in good condition. The artist passed away in 2017. Dimensions: width 60 cm (23.6 in), height 100 cm (39.4 in), depth 3 cm (1.2 in).
