Oil painting on canvas from the 18th century depicting Saint Peter and made by the circle of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. Within frame, not coeval. The painting is a very faithful replica of the well-known Piazzetta subject, successfully taken up by Marco Alvise Pitteri in his series of engravings of the Twelve Apostles with the Eternal Father, Christ, the Virgin Mary and Saint Paul. The work, in excellent condition, restretched, depicts one of the happiest subjects of Piazzetta's production. Saint Peter is depicted almost frontally, with his gaze turned upwards. His hands, in the lower part of the canvas, both hold the key, a typical attribute of the saint. A version of the work attributed to Piazzetta was auctioned at Christie's, New York, in 1980.
