The subject depicted in this painting is the Ecce Homo (or Christ of Sorrows crowned with thorns). It depicts the face of Jesus Christ during the Passion, characterized by the crown of thorns, the sorrowful gaze turned to heaven and the hands crossed on his chest. The painting captures a moment of intense suffering during the Passion, with a strong contrast of chiaroscuro typical of the period. It is one of the most traditional and widespread representations of Christian sacred art. Due to the strong contrasts of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), the dark tones and the dramatic rendering of the face, the work belongs to the tradition of Baroque painting of the Italian school (in particular of the Emilian school or the circle of Guido Reni) or of the Flemish school, dating back approximately to the 17th-18th century.
The painting is in excellent condition. It has a spot on its face, as shown in the photograph.
