Oil on canvas with antique gilded frame –
Italian school, early 18th century. The restoration was carried out with a wood lamp and shows no signs of pictorial restoration.
This ancient oil on canvas depicts Our Lady of Sorrows, framed in a rich gilded frame. At the center of the scene is the Virgin Mary, wrapped in a traditional blue-green cloak over a red robe. The figure is captured in a moment of deep emotion and pain, linked to the Passion of Christ. Sword Symbol: A small sword pierces the Virgin's chest, a clear iconographic reference to Simeon's prophecy in the Gospel of Luke ("And a sword will pierce your soul also"), which defines the figure of Mater Dolorosa. On the left, a winged cherub can be seen praying, while on the right appear two angels or angelic figures, a setting reminiscent of the devotional production of Emilian or Bolognese painting between the 17th and 18th centuries. Painting Features: This painting shows the typical signs of time associated with ancient works, with slight surface cracks. The style of the faces, the use of chiaroscuro and the composition strongly suggest its connection with the Italian painting schools of the Baroque or late Baroque period.
