An important Italian painting from the second half of the 19th century. This monumental oil on canvas work, signed "F. Vinea" on the lower left, is attributed to the great Italian painter Francesco Vinea (1845–1902), an artist particularly appreciated for his elegant costume scenes.
The painting depicts a full-length lady and gentleman, accompanied by a splendid greyhound, on a monumental terrace. The young woman, with a smiling face framed by soft curls, wears a luminous ivory dress with wide sleeves and an elegant lace collar, paired with a long blue robe embellished with gold trim. Beside her, the gentleman strikes a proud and casual pose, one hand resting on his hip and his sword in full view.
The flesh tones are modeled with delicate tonal transitions: the woman's smile and the gentleman's more steady gaze give the figures distinct personalities, making the composition lively and engaging. The palette is organized around ivory white, intense blue, black, and the red of the large drape that opens behind the couple. On the right, a column adorned with plant motifs accentuates the monumental nature of the setting, while the balustrade and the cloud-filled sky lend depth to the composition.
Trained in Florence by Enrico Pollastrini, Francesco Vinea developed a personal language dedicated to knights, ladies, and scenes of gallant life, attracting international collectors. In this composition, references to aristocratic portraiture combine with the decorative appeal of 19th-century painting.
The work is presented in a 20th-century gilded wooden frame, whose understated profile enhances the richness of the scene. The monumental format and the elegance of the figures make it ideal for a large hall, a stately entrance, or a prestigious residence, whether classical or contemporary.
