The Young Goatherd by Filippo Palizzi, 19th century
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right \"Fil. Palizzi 1852\". The Neapolitan artist Filippo Palizzi, also known as \"the painter of animals\" is considered a revitalizer of 19th-century Neapolitan painting. Abandoning academic painting, following contemporary French experiences, Palizzi devoted himself to life studies, especially humble subjects, such as small landscapes and animal paintings, creating works of intense realism yet imbued with an intimate poetic tone. He stood out above all for his meticulous execution of the details of his subjects, a skill also evident in this small painting, where a young goatherd lies on the grassy mountainside while his goats graze. Herds with shepherds were a recurring subject in Palizzi\'s work: for example, the same subject can be seen in a canvas also dated 1852, sold at a Dorotheum auction in Vienna on 23/10/2014. The painting is on its first canvas and presented in an antique frame.
