A striking 19th century European signed oil on canvas depicting Der Grenzer (“The Border Guard” / “The Frontiersman”), portraying a solitary rifleman standing within a dramatic mountainous landscape at sunset. The composition carries a strong Romantic period atmosphere with exceptional mood, depth, and rich earth-tone coloration. The painting is presented in an impressive deeply ornamented gilt frame featuring elaborate floral and foliate decoration, complementing the historic character of the artwork beautifully. Provinance: The reverse still retains an original historical label from the renowned Viennese auction house Dorotheum, where the work was acquired decades ago. The label references the title “Der Grenzer” and identifies the piece as an oil on canvas.
