Oil on canvas from the late 19th century depicting a naval battle scene, with a Renaissance-style rowing galleon in the centre. The work, clearly historically inspired, shows an allegorical female figure in the upper right corner, surrounded by cherubs, waving a tricolor flag (with red, white and the third color presumably green) and holding a baton of command surmounted by an eagle (symbol of imperial power). These iconographic elements recall the symbolism common in celebratory representations of naval battles, where the female figure appears in the skies as an emblem of victory and glory. She is gliding towards the soldier in armor who lies wounded on a rock, bottom left, turning her gaze towards the celestial figure who is coming to recognize its patriotic value. The use of color and light underlines the dramatic atmosphere. The drafting of the elements with poorly defined contours despite the richness of the details, refers to the production of the late nineteenth century. The canvas shows widespread loss of color and requires restoration. It is presented in a period frame.
