This copper engraving depicts the Pietà, heavily inspired by the famous composition by the 16th-century Spanish painter Luis de Morales, nicknamed "El Divino" (The Divine) due to the predominantly religious nature of his subjects. The Virgin Mary grievesly cradles the lifeless face and body of Jesus Christ. The strong contrasts of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), the dramatic intensity of the faces and the tapered shape of the hands and fingers are inimitable features of Luis de Morales' style. The artist and his workshop created numerous variations of this composition, which are now preserved in important collections such as the Prado Museum and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. Given the immense popularity of this model in later centuries (particularly in the 17th century), the work may be a later reinterpretation of a European school of painting.
