Magnificent Italian painting from the first half of the 18th century. Oil work on canvas depicting the biblical episode of Moses chasing away the shepherds from the well of Midian. Having fled Egypt, Moses helps Jethro's daughters by chasing away the shepherds who prevented them from drawing water from the well. The canvas clearly reveals the hand of the great Neapolitan artist Domenico Brandi (1684-1736), one of the greatest interpreters of animal painting.
Son of art, Brandi also worked in Rome in Rosa da Tivoli's workshop where he acquired the master's illustrative and bucolic taste. In fact, it is worth underlining the executive quality in the creation of the landscape, with splendid classical ruins, and of the pack animals, almost protagonists in the composition and described with anatomical precision. (The painting is not currently accompanied by expertise, but it is possible to request it upon payment of the relevant additional costs).
Large and impactful painting, ideal for a prestigious salon or professional studio. Spectacular 20th century frame, beautifully decorated, with some small defects and signs of aging. Work already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. It has a noticeable loss of color in the central part (see photo), easily restoreable, overall in a good state of conservation. Light painting H 148.5 x W 105 cm.
