Item description

Rare pair of 17th century Italian paintings. Oil on glass works depicting a mythological subject, games of cherubs and satyrs in an Arcadian landscape, of notable pictorial quality. This is reverse painting on glass, a very complex technique appreciated in the Baroque era. The cupids, naked and fleshy, are caught in carefree attitudes in an allegory of bacchanal. A putto is on the shoulders of a satyr, some eat bunches of grapes, still others with a vine crown on their heads recall the figure of Dionysus. The rendering of the complexions is luminous and glazed, with pink and mother-of-pearl shades. The structure of the composition is theatrical and decorative while the landscape, rich in minute details, creates a surprising depth. The Flemish influences are evident even if the works recall the Genoese school of the second half of the seventeenth century. Refined and difficult to find pendant, ideal for prestigious, classic or contemporary environments, perfect for enriching a wunderkammer, the so-called chamber of wonders. Elegant 19th century frames in ebonized wood with gilded bronze applications, with some signs of aging. Works overall in good state of conservation. Painting light H 26 x W 32.5 cm.
