Oil on canvas.
The man portrayed wears a severe black suit, albeit garnished with white wrists and neck, and holds a letter in his hands, which rests on other tomes; he could be a prelate or a jurist.
The work has been attributed to John Greenhill, a painter from Salisbury who worked in London from 1662, successfully dedicating himself to portraiture, receiving commissions in particular from actors, playwrights and men of letters.
The painting, which was previously restored and relined, is presented in a period frame.
