Large Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting a rich composition of fruits arranged on stone steps in front of a large landscape. The artist constructs the scene through a skilful alternation of full and empty spaces, allowing the gaze to range from the compact mass of fruit in the foreground to the blue distances of the volcano in the background.
The dominant element is made up of the two large bunches of grapes that descend with natural elegance towards the center of the composition. Around them are gathered peaches with velvety skin, plums with silvery reflections and a large pumpkin, arranged with apparent spontaneity. The large vine leaves, tinged with reddish and golden hues, introduce a seasonal note that suggests the arrival of autumn. Particularly refined is the rendering of light, which caresses the grapes making them almost translucent and gives the fruits a tangible presence. The painting stands out for a warm and enveloping palette, played on the contrasts between the amber shades of the peaches, the deep greens of the foliage and the purple highlights of the ripe grapes. Of notable interest is the landscape that opens on the left, the silent protagonist of the work. Between the crests of the trees we glimpse a distant mountain range, shrouded in a thin atmospheric haze, which, thanks to the technique of aerial perspective, gives considerable depth to the scene. In terms of stylistic characteristics and executive quality, the work appears to be referable to the northern Italian tradition of the second half of the seventeenth century, a particularly fertile environment for still life painting.
