Important Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work, of notable pictorial quality, depicting a peasant couple with work tools. The painting presents a composition of great impact, characterized by two figures portrayed half-length on a dark background. The man, facing the observer with an intense gaze, holds a spade and a pickaxe, flanked by an elderly woman who holds a vegetable in her hands and carries a distaff under her arm, an ancient tool used in spinning. The work tools placed at the center of the scene take on an almost symbolic function, transforming the painting into a true celebration of peasant life.
Particularly fascinating is the quality of the physiognomic rendering, evident in the deep wrinkles of the female face, in the robust hands and in the measured attitudes of the protagonists. In fact, the artist does not limit himself to describing facial features with naturalistic precision, but manages to convey the interior and psychological dimension of the characters. In terms of style and figurative sensitivity, the work appears to be attributable to the naturalistic tradition of Lombard genre painting, which developed between the end of the seventeenth century and the first decades of the eighteenth century.
It is a painting with a strong personality, ideal for collectors of high-period paintings, particularly suitable for historic residences, country homes or elegant contemporary interiors in which it can act as a refined contrasting element. Work that is part of a pendant (see photo and ask for the price of the pair if still available). Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation.
