Splendid Italian painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil painting on canvas, depicting a lively pastoral scene, of notable pictorial quality. Work signed at the bottom left (see photo) attributable to Filippo Palizzi (1818-1899), one of the greatest interpreters of nineteenth-century Neapolitan painting (the painting is not currently accompanied by expertise, but it is possible to request it upon payment of the relevant additional costs). Palizzi revolutionized the genre by abandoning academic artifices to directly study nature from life, dedicating an almost scientific attention to the observation of animals and the rural world.
The work takes up a famous Palizzi invention now preserved in the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan. The painting shows a donkey loaded with fresh grass besieged by a group of goats, while a little girl sitting on the hay watches the scene and a shepherd, in the background, intervenes to guide the cattle. In this composition the artist's interest focuses above all on the behavior of the herd: the goats, animated by an irresistible impulse towards the hay carried by the donkey, invade the scene creating a mix of movements, postures and chromatic contrasts of great narrative effectiveness.
The painting stands out for its pleasant dynamism, for the naturalistic rendering of the animals and for the bright and ironic character of the scene. Work of great decorative and collectible charm, ideal for classic environments, country houses, professional studios or elegant interiors. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation.
