Item description

Important Italian painting from the 16th century. Work in tempera on wood, of notable pictorial quality, with monumental original carved and gilded carpentry. The altarpiece depicts a Sacred Conversation with the Madonna and Child flanked by Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. Below we find a group of kneeling devotees receiving the rosary beads from Jesus in an intense moment of prayer. The clothing, with elegant ruffs and rich sixteenth-century style dresses, suggests that they could be the donors, local nobles or members of a brotherhood. Work attributable to the production of the Renaissance artist Boniforte Oldoni the Younger (1520-1585), a leading exponent of Piedmontese painting in the second half of the sixteenth century (the painting is not currently accompanied by an expertise, but it is possible to request it upon payment of the relevant additional costs). The most extraordinary element of the work is the exceptional decorative apparatus that surrounds the main scene. An architectural frame with a golden arch encloses the composition while, along the entire perimeter, a rich cycle of roundels depicting episodes from the life of the Virgin and Christ develops. The lateral pilasters are decorated with refined candelabra motifs executed in gold, while the upper corners feature elegant ornamental spirals. In the left corner, a wonderful cherub carved in high relief survives, no longer present on the right (see photo). The whole still retains the appearance of a large Renaissance altarpiece, a rare example of Italian devotional painting. This table is intended for collectors of high-period paintings, foundations, religious institutions and enthusiasts of sacred art. Due to its imposing dimensions and strong scenographic impact, the painting finds an ideal location in large reception rooms, libraries, private chapels and historic homes. Work that has undergone some restoration and carpentry work, has some wooden defects and discolouration (see photo). Overall in good state of conservation.
