Item description

Important Italian painting from the second half of the 18th century. Oil work on canvas attributed to the great Tuscan painter Giuliano Traballesi (1731 – 1812), depicting a rare Allegory of the Dawn that extinguishes the Night (The attribution is consistent from both a stylistic and iconographic point of view and is further supported by the expertise of the art historian Federica Spadotto, who traces the painting back to the late maturity of the Florentine master). The protagonist of the composition is an idealized young female figure, sitting with composed elegance and crowned with a delicate garland of roses. In her left hand, Aurora gracefully supports a small bird placed on her finger, a traditional symbol of the awakening of nature and the announcement of the new day. Next to her, a putto holds a now smoking torch, an allusion to the night that goes out before the arrival of light, while the other two putti weave and collect roses, recalling the rebirth of nature. The painting stands out for the perfect balance of the masses, the classic elegance of the poses and the extraordinary executive quality. The face of Aurora, with delicate features and a serene expression, reveals a sophisticated academic sensitivity, while the soft modeling of the complexions and the naturalness of the cherubs' anatomies testify to the hand of an artist of high figurative culture. Particularly valuable is the magnificent drapery that envelops the main figure. The wide folds of the pink cloth, animated by highlights and delicate chiaroscuro passages, give monumentality to the figure without sacrificing the lightness typical of eighteenth-century taste. The sage green of the robe, embellished with a refined light blue band decorated with neoclassical gold motifs, creates a refined chromatic dialogue with the pink of the cloak and the warm tones of the skin tones. A work of great elegance and notable pictorial quality, ideal for historic homes, professional studios, prestigious environments furnished with classic or contemporary taste. Spectacular 20th century frame in gilded wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. Work already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation. Painting light H 115 x W 95 cm.
