After studying at the school of Industrial Design in Sesto Fiorentino, Ugo Zaccagnini (1868 -1937) from Pistoia established himself as a master sculptor and model maker at Richard-Ginori. He left the factory in 1896 to found S.I.F.M.A (Società Industriale Fabbricazione Maioliche Artistiche) with some partners in Sesto Fiorentino, and in 1905 he opened Ugo Zaccagnini & Figli in Florence, specializing in multicolored majolica inspired by the Della Robbia, of which Zaccagnini revived several examples as well as Art Nouveau products. The 1930s, when Ugo was succeeded by his son Urbano, marked the triumph of the company on an international scale, when Disney commissioned the production of a series of ceramic cartoon figurines.
