date and location: until 6 January throughout Italy

Christms decorations, seasonal food, handmade gifts, antiques, bric-a-brac, lights and huge decorated trees: lovers of vintage and Christmas shopping are in turmoil for the Christmas markets, which evoke the evocative winter atmospheres of large European cities, from Vienna to the Germany markets, such as that of Nuremberg. Italy has equally beautiful ones, which animate the main squares of large cities to smaller towns. We recommend that you consult the website of the individual markets to take note of the restrictions, any cancellations and health safety regulations in force this year. But here is a small selection, from North to South, of the Italian Christmas markets running until January 6.

The markets of the Trentino Alto Adige region are undoubtedly the most famous because they are close to the wonderful scenery of the Nordic tradition par excellence. Between lights, musical events and workshops dedicated to children, the Bolzano Christmas Market is considered one of the most beautiful, as well as the largest in Italy, and its tradition has long-lived roots, as much as those of the most beautiful German Christmas markets. Highlight of this event spread throughout the city? Selected local and traditional crafts and artifacts.

Staying in Northern Italy and opting for a more urban atmosphere which takes on festive attire at Christmas, we move to Milan, with its christmas market located around the Duomo, focused on local food, art and crafts, passing through the Banco di Garabombo by the underground station of Pagano, the largest European tent dedicated to fair trade and solidarity economy, up to the magic of the Village of Wonders which animates the Indro Montanelli Gardens of the Porta Venezia area with its skating rink, the beloved Elves Market and Christmas street food.

For a particularly picturesque atmosphere we head to central Italy, precisely in the medieval Umbrian city of Gubbio, until 9 January made even more magical by its legendary "ChristmasLand" market, which transforms the entire city into a Christmas village. Between skating rinks, the famous village house of Santa Claus and traditional quality crafts, Gubbio also boasts the largest Christmas tree in the world, made up of podetic lights positioned on the Mount Igino, which always leave you speechless.

Among the cities of the South of Italy, Naples could certainly not be missing, with its tradition of nativity scenes in via San Gregorio Armeno, the heart of the artisans of this ancient art, who produce statuettes of every shape and style, from traditional biblical characters to the statuettes of celebrities. And arriving as far as the Salento area in the Puglia region, the markets of Lecce shine between Piazza Mazzini and Piazza Oronzo, parallel to the famous Santa Lucia Fair with its displays of papier-mâché nativity scenes. Hurray for the handmade!

Wishing you to take advantage of some of these lovely occasions, best wishes for a Merry Christmas from the whole intOndo team!
