All of us have suffered from the so-called 'fear of the blank page' at least once in our lives. It is defined by some as writer's block: a real creative crisis that precedes the beginning of a project. It can happen at any time, at any age and in different areas, not necessarily related to the world of literature. You have just bought your dream house and you want to furnish it in the most personal and comfortable way possible, but you just don't know how to get your hands on it. White walls and empty rooms give you a real sense of panic: it is normal in these cases to have a great confusion in your head and to think that you cannot tackle such a titanic task. Have no fear, take a deep breath and follow our advice!
If you are a beginner, it is good to keep in mind that the spaces you are going to furnish will have to be lived in and therefore you will have to feel comfortable in them, regardless of eccentric passing fashions or advice from friends and relatives that you do not feel is in line with your personality or taste.
The first useful move is to do a bit of research in online sites or magazines that can help you decide which style to direct your future choices towards: modern, minimal, rustic, baroque... save pictures, drawings and newspaper clippings and place them all on a physical support, so that you have an overview: which details jump out at you the most? Are there shapes, colours or features that are most present in the images you have selected? If you have spotted them, chances are you would like to find them in your home.
Once you have realised which taste would suit you best, you will have to do a rough analysis of your lifestyle, whether current or planned for the future, to understand what your needs really are: do you work from home? A cool desk and a comfortable design chair could make smart working much more pleasant. Do you love having friends over for dinner? A large, convivial table could do the trick. Does the house have a garden that is at its best in summer? A wooden bench with a rustic but romantic look could make many loves blossom.
Having your priorities clear, you will see that you are already at a very good point in your work. Proceed one step at a time! Having made all the assessments, the first piece of advice that will prove successful is to focus on one room at a time, perhaps starting with the largest or the one you intend to use the most. Identify the most important piece of space. In a dining room, it is the table; in a living room, it is the sofa; in a bedroom, it is the bed. The most important piece of furniture in a room is the one you use the most, so quality is important. Only later, to characterise the rooms, will the various accessories be added: pay attention to the choice of colours and materials.
Good lighting is equally crucial: never take the importance of light in a room for granted. Chandeliers, wall lights, table lamps or floor lamps can not only be functional but also make the home more welcoming thanks to the atmosphere they diffuse.
Now it’s time to give your home a touch of character with what represents you most: a nice rug in the living room perhaps, a few paintings on the walls and a nice coat rack at the entrance where you can hang your coat after a stressful day at work. Welcome back home!
