Ceramic sculpture by Giovanni Gariboldi, Società Ceramica Richard-Ginori, S. Cristoforo factory, Milan, Italy, 1940s. Foal sitting with head turned backwards, enamelled in black and brown. Brand under the base. 26×16 cm. Height 21cm. The design of the model dates back to 1936 and can be attributed to Giovanni Gariboldi, who in the same year also presented various objects and other animal figures at S. Cristoforo objects and other terracotta animal figures from S. Cristoforo at the Milan Triennale (see Richard-Ginori at the VI Triennale, in Domus, June 1936, pp. 28-31, p. 28). The position of the animal suggests that Gariboldi may have been inspired for this model by a Chinese object carved in jade (see Chinese carved in jade (see O. Rucellai, L'Oriente, Ponti e Gariboldi: some correspondences, in Amici di Doccia-Quaderni, VI 2012, pp. 78-91, p. 86, fig. 18). The horse, like the other models in the catalog of Art ceramics from the S. Cristoforo Manufacture, it was available in multiple color variations (See for example G. Cavagna di Gualdana, Giovanni Gariboldi, 2010, pp. 89 and 113)
