"Sfera" Suspension Chandelier by Tobia & Afra Scarpa for Flos (1964)
An icon of 1960s Italian design, the "Sfera" pendant chandelier, created by the famous designer duo Tobia and Afra Scarpa for Flos in 1964, embodies the minimalist elegance and sophisticated simplicity that made Italian design of that era famous.
This iconic chandelier is characterized by a spherical diffuser in etched opal glass, which emanates a soft, diffused and enveloping light, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the surrounding environment. The purity of the spherical shape, combined with the delicate finish of the glass, gives the chandelier a timeless elegance and versatility that adapts to different furnishing styles.
The suspension system consists of a tubular element in chromed or painted metal (specify the finish if you know it) which connects to the ceiling rose via a cable, often covered in a protective spiral which adds a functional and aesthetic detail. The construction simplicity enhances the intrinsic beauty of the glass diffuser, making it the true protagonist of the design.
The "Sfera" chandelier by Tobia & Afra Scarpa for Flos is not just a source of lighting, but a true piece of Italian design history, appreciated for its pure form, the quality of the materials and the ability to integrate with discretion and elegance into any space. A timeless classic that continues to fascinate design lovers all over the world.
Born in Venice in 1935, Tobia Scarpa is the son of the famous architect Carlo Scarpa. Together with his wife Afra (unmarried Bianchin, born in Montebelluna in 1937) Tobia began working in the Venini glass factory in Murano in the 1950s. In 1960 the couple opened their own design studio in Montebelluna, and soon worked together with large companies such as Flos, Cassina, B&B Italia, and Knoll. Their work ranges from glass objects to furniture and lighting, from interior design to architecture, and uses new materials and cutting-edge technologies. Their design style embraces a decidedly modern aesthetic, whose priority is elegance and comfort, and the couple's products are above all admired for their simplicity and elegance, which makes them easily combined with more classic designs.
