Item description

Bench dating back to the end of the 19th century (last quarter, circa 1870-1890) and, at most, the very first years of the 20th century (Umbertine period or early Liberty). The Style: This is a piece in the Eclectic or Umbertine Renaissance style, very popular in Italy at that time. The style refers to Renaissance and Baroque forms, reinterpreting them. The Key Details: The Cabriole Legs: The "S" curved legs ending with a curl are a Baroque/Rococo element revived in the nineteenth century. The Carving on the Leg: The detail of the floral and foliage carving on the upper part of the leg is typical of nineteenth-century manufacturing, which often added flower decorations to more severe structures. The Raised Armrests: The contoured shape of the lateral armrests is characteristic of this period for piano or toilet benches. The Fabric: The floral tapestry covering, while consistent with the style, is difficult to date with certainty from the photos. It could be original or, more likely, a remake from a later period (mid-1900s) that imitates the original style. There is a small lack in one of the feet
